Since forming in 1990, guitarist/keyboardist Tim Gane and vocalist Laetitia Sadier’s Stereolab has gone through several stylistic changes, but never strayed too far from its original design.

Drawing inspiration from ’70s German motorik bands like Neu! and Kraftwerk, Stereolab developed their sound through the use of vintage synthesizers, layered guitars, pulsing electronic hisses, a metronomic rhythm section and a soft-spoken, bilingual female vocalist on classic albums like 1993’s Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements and 1994’s Mars Audiac Quintet. On later albums they remained rooted in that sound, but added brass and string arrangements, as well as more nuanced electronics, to essentially create a mini post-rock orchestra.

Sadier and Gane’s latest record, Chemical Chords, is yet another volume of Germanic synth exercises with some serious pop sensibilities. The opener, “Neon Beanbag,” pulls off an electro-Beach Boys feel with various keyboard passages layered over one another and held up by a backbone of quarter-notes from various percussive instruments, including an attention-hogging tambourine. “Three Women” starts with a drum lick, and then a bass pattern enters, followed by a brief guitar riff that dies as soon as Sadier enters with her French vocals. From there, tension is built until the brass section bursts in, trumpets permeating a swamp of organs.

The constant quarter-note is a recurring motif on Chemical Chords, one that happens to drive some of the best songs on the album. Songs like “The Ecstatic Static” and “Silver Sands” have a distinctly ’60s feel, and perhaps not incidentally stand out among many of the other tracks. Additional highlights include “Self Portrait with ‘Electric Brain,’” “Cellulose Sunshine” and “Vortical Phonotheque.”

Chemical Chords and the subsequent tour may win over some new fans. They may not. At this point, Stereolab may have passed the peak of their exposure. But even if the year ends without a single stray ear picking up on their wonders for the first time, at least the album will remind old fans that one of the most original and outstanding bands of the past decade hasn’t deteriorated a bit.
