Charlie Finch

Charlie Finch is the mastermind of Fecal Japan, an explosive, guitar worshipping psych freak-out project that initially started as a solo project. The band has seen members come and go but recently solidified into a trio. Finch and company have been known to perform inside an inflatable plastic structure with accompanying light show, but he says he's going to have to make a new one, as the seams are ripping apart and it smells most foul after excessive interior liquor spillage. When Fecal Japan opened for Blue Cheer at Pilot Light last year, guitarist Dickie Peterson suggested to Finch he should fill it with nitrous oxide.
Suicide
“Cheree”

CF: Yea, Suicide! “Cheree!” That's such a great song. I love this song. This is an amazing album. Those guys really revolutionized a lot of music in the mid-‘70s in New York. I heard that there were riots at those shows because people couldn't handle it. They're insanely influential on a lot of people and certainly on stuff I do. It reminds me somewhat of what Epic Soundtracks was going for in some of his solo stuff.
Wooden Shjips
“Losin' Time”

CF: I'm not familiar with this, but it sounds contemporary. I don't know.
KV: Wooden Shjips.
CF: Ah! That's a band a few people have told me I need to check out but haven't yet. It sounds pretty awesome. It sounds kind of like Spacemen 3 or Loop. I like the reverb on the vocals.
Chrome
“Pharaoh Chromium”

CF: I don't know this, but I like that wah-guitar a lot.
KV: It's Chrome.
CF: Oh, that was Chrome?! Wow, I don't know that song. Chrome is awesome, I wish I had more of that stuff, but it's really hard to find on vinyl. I remember seeing a record of theirs at a record show, and the guy wanted $75 and wouldn't come down on it.
KV: So you have to have it on vinyl?
CF: Vinyl's my preferred medium for listening and collecting. I have CDs, but for some reason, those things don't stick around as long. When I hear something I like, I really want to find the vinyl version of it, and sometimes, that takes several years. I've sold off a bunch of CDs to pay rent or whatever several times, but I have a hard time getting rid of records.
KV: It's kind of funny how format shapes our listening habits, and all that's changing, of course, with downloads and MP3s.
CF: Yeah, it's crazy. I've had conversations before about kids that are 19 now, and when I'm like 50, will they even know what records are? But people are still into 78s, so you never know.
Frijid Pink

KV: Frijid Pink.
CF: Oh, Frijid Pink! I really like their first record.
KV: They seem to have been forgotten, but they were pretty cool, pretty heavy for their time.
CF: Yeah, they were, and it's weird, you can find their records in thrift stores a lot. I don't understand why more records like that aren't heralded as being really great. Maybe they'll be like a Nuggets compilation for stuff like this.
