Strike one was the ump’s fault, let’s say.
Obama’s a man of color. His middle name is Hussein. His first name rhymes with Iraq, his last with Osama. These are accidents, synchronicities or providences of history, depending on your seat in the stadium. They’re not his fault, and in the Field of Dreams that Obama would build, such trivialities would not count as strikes.
But in the cold calculus of scoreboards they matter. Take color. Obama gets support of black Americans. He gets Oprah’s endorsement. When Geradine Ferraro says Obama made it to the show because he’s black, it’s an issue. When Bill Clinton compares Obama to Jesse Jackson, it’s an issue. And when Obama’s minister Jeremiah Wright alleges that our government created AIDS in order to kill people of color, and when he makes a chant of “God damn America” in a Sunday sermon, it’s more than an issue.
It’s strike two.
You could see it coming from the top deck. Obama’s had 20 years to take aim at this pitch, but like Casey in Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s perennial classic, “Casey at the Bat,” Obama let it sail across the plate. He could’ve knocked it out of the park years back by leaving the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago’s south side, or by asking Wright to resign. Instead, Obama asked the raspy-throated minister to marry him and Michelle and later baptize their daughters. Wright’s recent resignation comes too late.
Fortunately for Obama this story broke during the 7th inning stretch. The Pennsylvania primary is scheduled for April 22, and there’s been time for damage control. I wrote in a print version of this column that Obama should do three impossible things before breakfast. Convince the public that Rev. Wright speaks for himself. Throw this fastball back at his opponents, by reminding them of incendiary statements by John Hagee, Pat Robertson, the late Jerry Falwell and even Billy Graham, all reverends favored by the right. Finally, I wrote, Obama should change the subject fast by talking about the right of Floridians to vote in an honest primary.
Those were suggestions worthy of a professional political strategist, if I say so myself.
But Obama put such calculations to shame. Masterfully, in a speech on Tuesday, March 18, he used this crisis as an opportunity to elevate the debate. Yes, he repudiated Rev. Wright’s hateful teachings, but he embraced the man, portraying him as a flawed father figure, a scarred fount of good works, and yes, ugly pronouncements, but an ultimately well-meaning mentor who’s done much good. He showed how Wright’s a throwback to an earlier generation, comparable to Obama’s own white grandmother, whose stereotypes of blacks he also resents. Don’t most of us know a lovable racist or two?
Obama eschewed the notion of throwing this fireball back at his opponents, and not, I think, because he’s based his campaign on the notion that he’s above such divisiveness. Rather, after watching his speech in real time on TV, I believe it’s because Obama REALLY IS above such divisiveness. He long ago made a decision not to engage in dugout brawls, because he really is about CHANGE.
He changed the subject. This controversy is not about one nutty old man with bile in his heart, Obama suggested. Rather, the subject is the reality of racial grudges in this country. It’s a testimony to his integrity that Obama touched all the bases on Tuesday. He remarked on the history of slavery in this country, yet found room for praising America’s political foresightedness in planting the seeds for equality. He touched on race prejudice as a barrier against blacks getting ahead, but acknowledged the grievances of those poor whites who never harmed a black person, yet worry that people of color sometimes get breaks at their expense. Yes, he suggested, it sometimes happens. He embraced Latinos, Native Americans and many others. In taking such a broad view, he changed the subject.
Keeping it changed won’t be easy. Bloggers and politicos are sifting church bulletins, calendars and videotapes to see what the Rev. Wright preached about on those Sundays Obama sat in the pews. Undoubtedly there’s footage of the Obama baptisms and wedding. Then there’s the video of Michelle saying, “for the first time in my adult life I’m really proud of my country.”
This story has more legs than any Chicago baseball team, though possibly not as many as the cast of witnesses in the Tony Rezko trial. Which brings us to strike three.
“The pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go…” in the words of Thayer. This pitch might just be too endowed with spin, speed and timing for Obama to handle, though he shatter the very air in swinging. The growing blogosphere buzz about Obama’s ties to Rezko could be catastrophic, even if much of the buzz proves false.
That’s because Rezko, who helped Obama buy a house and contributed to his campaign, took money from a billionaire Iraqi-Brit named Nadhmi Auchi who amassed part of his fortune doing business with–I hate to say the name–Saddam Hussein, according to a series of articles in the London Times online.
This link drew a mention on the Glenn Beck TV show a couple of weeks back and is sure to surface again. Yes, Beck is an unprincipled opportunist. Still, if Auchi’s name continues to surface, this could be strike three. Obama could find himself dodging charges–some already hurled by right-handed pitchers–that old, laundered money from Saddam made it into the real estate deal with Rezko if not into Obama’s campaign.
It’s a natural charge for master strategists such as Karl Rove. His sort will swift-boat Obama unmercifully. Assuming Obama’s still in the game come April 15, the date by which Hillary promises to release her tax records, watch for a proxy to raise the “Saddam connection.” This could change the narrative long enough to hand Hillary Pennsylvania. A win there could bring Super Delegates her way, and we’d find ourselves in extra innings, come August, with Big Mo on Hillary’s side.
OK, it isn’t fair. Saddam was a so-called American ally at the time of Auchi’s involvement. Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush 41, and many other Republicans had ties to Saddam and other murdering arms merchants. The Clintons likely know such players.
But Obama hails from the Field of Dreams. He would build a park in which American decency would flourish. Build it and they will come. So the appearance of money launderers, influence peddlers, weapons dealers and bombastic preachers in his dugout is unsavory to say the least. This is not CHANGE. This is the oldest game in the world. Many an Obama supporter must feel like the kid who approached Shoeless Joe when the Chicago White Sox threw the 1919 World Series. Say it ain’t so, Barack. Say it ain’t so….
Barack just might have an answer though. Again, by raising the level of debate. After all, isn’t it past time we took a good hard look at just who defines America’s friends and enemies, and just who profits from such calls? Obama could just be the one to deliver such a line drive into the heart of the matter.
Obama’s at the bat, the pitch is on its way.
And there’s still hope for joy in Mudville.

Wrong as usual, Don. But isn’t it interesting to note that the only people consumed with noting the color of Obama’s skin are liberals? I have yet to hear a conservative even mention it. As for the name, you’re wrong on that, too. Um, I’m not sure, but I don’t think Obama’s name changed while he was winning eleven straight primaries or garnering more popular votes than Hitlery.
B. Hussein Obama will lose because his radical leftist agenda is now being exposed little by little, and when the American people become fully aware of the political opportunist, serial liar, and absolute socialist he is, the mainstream public will run screaming in the other direction.
B. Hussein Obama wants to hand $845 billion of your money to other nations: his Global Poverty Act would commit the United States to spending, over the next 13 years, $845 billion more than what we already do on global poverty. Obama followed that up with a release that said in part, “It must be a priority of American foreign policy to commit to eliminating extreme poverty…” If Obama actually believes that not only is the United States capable of “eliminating extreme poverty,” but that we should actually make that utopian dream a “priority,” then he’s far too naive to be in the White House.
And if you think George Bush is a big spender, you haven’t met Obama: Even though the United States is already running a deficit, Obama is planning to push a whole host of new big government programs including a “10-year, $150 billion program to establish a green energy sector,” a “$60 billion National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank,” and a “nearly universal health care plan (whose annual price tag he low-balls at $50 to $65 billion).” If you’re all for tax and spend liberalism and watching the deficit spiral even further out of control, there’s no one you should want in the White House more than Obama.
He would be a complete and utter disaster for this country. Hang on to your wallets, he wants your money to give to others. Taxes would go through the roof and the economy would be a disaster the likes of we have not seen since Jimmy Carter. Gas prices might be around $10 per gallon and the economy would be in ruins. Part of that is because he is an apostate and would have some issues trying to resolve the problems in the Middle East not to mention pulling all the troops out of Iraq.
This cretin is actually promising to throw away the hard earned gains our troops have made in Iraq by immediately removing combat brigades each month, regardless of the situation on the ground, and by having all of our “combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months.”
Keep saying to yourself over and over again. Jimmy Carter, Jimmy Carter, Jimmy Carter…double digit inflation, double digit unemployement rates, double digit interest rates, gas lines, military humiliation, ultra high taxes, etc…
And these are his good points! Why, I haven’t even gotten around to mentioning his million-dollar “favors” he’s done for defense contractor General Dynamics. Curiously, General Dynamics is one of his top supporters (gasp! But…but…I thought he was anti-military industrial complex!!) and James Crown — a member of Obama’s national finance committee — serves on the board of General Dynamics.
Add to that another million-dollar earmark he gave to the hospital which employs his wife (who, according to her, has never been proud of America in her adult life until last month). Strangely enough, right after the hospital thought it was going to get its $1 million, Michelle’s salary triples! Surprise, surprise!
Oh, yeah, this guy’s all about “rising above” the same old politics. He wants to really bring “change,” not like the other politicians.
To quote The Who: “Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.”
As usual, Don rises to the occasion with his creative baseball metaphor that sets Obama’s political race clearly in focus. As in the game itself, one only gets three strikes and then it is back to the dugout. Hopefully, Obama can anticipate the final pitch, plant his feet firmly, and swing mightily, connecting for a “hit.” And it would be nice for the Democrats to avoid going into extra innings, since the major matchup with Big Mac is still to come. Now, burst open a box of crackerjacks as we head into the ninth inning.
There, there, Janet. It’s going to be OK.
We’ve already had the “complete and utter disaster for this country” - the Cheney-Bush administration, the biggest spenders since the last biggest spender, Ronnie “Star Wars” Ray-Gun. Well, it’s almost over. Less than a year to go. And we have the audacity to hope that the new boss won’t be more of the same old boss.
So long neocons and your unprovoked preemptive invasion and occupation, WMD lies, bunker buster “collateral damage (death)”, torture, supsended habeas corpus, warrantless wiretaps, Halliburton handouts, Blackwater butchery, rape of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, inept Katrina management, Terry Schiavo interfering, asleep at the wheel/on vacation leading up to 9/11, all-time record deficits, and who knows what else. Good riddance, and please don’t come back.
I must say I am not surprised that the media has made a 24/7/21 event out of this non issue as usual….then I compare it to John McInsane’s “hardly worth mentioning” once according to them….let’s see, Obama’s pastor says the USA brought on 9/11 with their supprot of Israel and their policies in the middle east and that color is still an issue in the USA…all true, but McInsane’s pastor wanting Armaqgeddon against the Muslims is a trivial thing not worth mentioning………..yes it is definitely Insane.
And to our resident troll: the earmark for the hospital she is so angry about did not get granted….unlike the trillion dollars for Bu$hco’s warmongering……..just to set the facts straight.
I couldn’t agree less.
