It seems that an ever-increasing amount of our lives are made up of items and goods designed entirely for our sole and personal consumption — the key word being personal.
Many kids at a relatively young age have televisions in their bedrooms so they don’t have to watch whatever the rest of their family wants to watch. The personal pan pizza is ever popular, and it seems like practically everybody now has his or her own personal cell phone, which doesn’t just allow you to talk to whomever you want on your own time, but to text message, send e-mails, watch movies, listen to music and God knows what else. And, of course, one of the enduring symbols of American culture is the personal automobile — for young people getting your first car that you can call your own is considered a near-holy rite of passage in our society. All of this is intended to allow people as much of one thing — independence — as possible.
I wouldn’t be telling the whole truth if I acted as if I weren’t also complicit in this quest for personal independence and flexibility.
Yes, I do own a cell phone and have found it to be pretty damn useful a number of times, though I don’t do anything on it besides use it as an actual phone — I still have no idea how to text message.
I’m writing this column on my own personal laptop, which I love to death, while listening to some great African music on my own iTunes playlist that I created for myself. I think it’s great that on this one single machine — a laptop computer — I can keep in contact with practically everybody (via e-mail), watch movies (using the DVD drive), receive podcasts of all manner of radio shows, have a sizable music library on hand (through MP3s), have regular access to the largest and constantly evolving storehouse of knowledge and information in human history (the Web) and even write columns for the good readers of the Knoxville Voice (using word processor software), among many other things, and it’s all mine!
So yeah, this world of personalized services and technical gizmos is very nifty and cool, for sure. And, hey, isn’t “independence” and it’s close sibling “liberty” what the United States has always been about, and what makes it so friggin’ awesome, after all? So what’s the problem?
Well, you don’t have to go very far to see the connection between our current destruction of our only home — the planet — and the very American idea of personal ownership. Transportation in America is still one of the highest, if not the No. 1, causes of greenhouse gas emissions — just go on I-75 or I-40 that criss-cross Knoxville, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
The second biggest emitter of carbon dioxide is electricity. Seeing the piles of cell phones, cell phone chargers, computers, computer accessories, dead iPods and everything else that we’ve been told we personally need to have right now fill landfill sites will show anybody just how much electricity we’re demanding.
All right, so I’m guessing you get the point. We value personal possessions above all else, and see it as our God-given right to have the liberty to have these personal possessions; indeed, that’s what makes us “free” as human beings. But what’s the solution, you ask?
I really don’t have a definite answer, but there is something that’s been rattling around in my head for a good long while, that I term simply “The Shared Economy.” Now, I hear you already shrinking in horror, saying, “But that’s that dad-gummed Communism rearing its ugly head again, son!! We can’t have that! The Soviets did that, and look where it got them!” You’re right to a point — life in the Soviet Union was pretty miserable a lot of the time, from most reports, and certainly not something we want to emulate. But I think there could be a middle way here.
For example, most people who are taking serious looks at how to transform society for a sustainable future are talking about public transportation eventually superseding the personal car as the main way we get around. The idea of phasing out the personal automobile in the United States is usually scoffed at and all manner of reasons are given — it’d be way too expensive… what about truckers? What about the interstates? It would disadvantage certain populations, etc, etc.
