Experts say individual, industrial and governmental irresponsibility have harmed Earth’s environment with global climate change, air pollution, water contamination, depleted and destroyed resources, threatened animal and plant life, and an unsustainable reliance on petroleum production.
If you feel overwhelmed by dire reports, we hope the people and programs profiled in the Green Guide inspire you to find a way to participate in addressing the issues facing our environment today. Earth Day is April 22, but these East Tennessee researchers, activists, farmers, scientists, students, concerned citizens, and government and non-profit workers devote the entire year making valuable contributions to global and local environmental solutions.
From carpool and bicycling groups and national park volunteers to food produced locally and education opportunities, they present simple but meaningful ways for locals to make a difference during this season when we take to the mountains, rivers and valleys in a renewed appreciation and enjoyment of our natural surroundings.
SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN THE SMOKIES
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year, and local, state and national partners are already implementing plans to commemorate the occasion with renewed conservation and sustainability efforts.
Knoxville will host a Sustainable Tourism Summit April 28 and 29, and Commissioner Susan Whitaker of Tennessee’s Department of Tourist Development has planned and guided the process from its inception. Her enthusiasm for the project and the mission to incorporate eco-friendly practices into the tourism industry is evident as she speaks about the conference and its impact on the region.
“When the park was created 75 years ago, there was an economic aspect, but the primary focus was protecting the beauty, resources and the environment so the gateway communities can benefit from the people who come to the park and use that as an economic base,” says Whitaker. “How you build that base becomes critical because if you ruin the landscape, you’ve killed the goose that lays the golden egg. [Tourists] are looking for the distinctive culture, heritage and food of an area and for the beauty to be sustained.”
National Geographic has signed on to undertake a three-year project in the Smoky Mountains to assist gateway communities with those goals, and Whitaker’s plan is supported by Gov. Phil Bredesen, the University of Tennessee and the state Agriculture and Economic and Community Development departments, among others. Communities in Knox, Blount, Sevier and Cocke counties also showed support in a series of town hall forums that provided residents an opportunity to hear ideas and provide feedback.
Experts from National Geographic, federal agencies and communities that have already implemented the concepts that will join government officials like Mayor Bill Haslam at the summit to share implementation strategies and educate the public and industrial representatives on incentives and resources.
“I think a lot of people around the Smokies love their area and really do not want to see it lose its charm, beauty and distinctiveness,” she says. “We’d love to see the state create infrastructure that local groups can plug into, and we’d like to be a model for the nation where people say, ‘You should go to the Smokies. They love their environment and have incorporated these standards.’” (Elizabeth Wright)
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
Three local environmental groups work toward a similar, sustainable end
By Lisa Slade
What do a 19-year-old college student, a 65-year-old retired professional and a 40-year-old blue-collar worker have in common?
They’re all members of Knoxville green groups, and they all agree on one bottom line: The environment is in trouble, and saving it requires dedicated individuals like the members of the University of Tennessee’s Students Promoting Environment Action in Knoxville, the Knoxville Green Party and the disparate environmentalists who join for Green Drinks once a month to fraternize and discuss issues of sustainability.
I celebrated Earth Day with a big cookout over an old-fashioned charcoal barbecue. Afterwards, I threw the plastic cups and styrofoam plates into the fire. It was really nice. But don’t worry, I just bought a billion tons of carbon emission credits! (Well, I just wrote IOU's to myself, like Al Gore!)
So fire up that grill, SUV, or power plant tonight because carbon credits make pollution magically vanish!
Isn't it awesome that we get to use junk science and scare tactics to guilt a dumbed-down population into turning on their lights, firing up their computers, and powering up their TVs in order to create "Green Guides" for the rest of us?
As long as we don’t let these rubes find out that the globe hasn’t warmed at all in the past seven years, four of the hottest ten years in recorded history happened in the 1930s, and thousands of climate scientists are now coming forward to dispute the idea of man-made “global warming,” we can continue to profit off our religion!
Thanks, Al Gore! You're super-serial.
PS. Anybody got a good recipe for spotted owl? How about baby seal?
