Voice Choice 2008 (Page 2 of 10)

April 3, 2008
By: Knoxville Voice

And Saturday, hit the floor between performances by special guests at the Rainbow Room West — everybody’s shakin’ it to hip-hop and party tunes, so don’t be shy and learn some new moves. (Elizabeth Wright)

Best Jukebox…
This is definitely one of the most subjective categories. One’s favorite jukebox depends on a number of factors, including genre preference, the juke’s array of selection, bar atmosphere, cost per song and, perhaps most importantly, your mood and blood alcohol content on any given night. We must also admit that there are way too many bars in this town for us to have conducted any sort of comprehensive testing, so this is more like a few of our favorites from the dozen or so bars with which we’re most intimate.

Our nod for best honky-tonk jukebox goes to, where else, Toots Little Honky Tonk at 114 E. Anderson Ave. in Old North Knox. The neighborhood bar has a great selection of country classics and a smattering of newfangled country, but nothing too contemporary or pop-heavy. Classic rock and beloved oldies round out the selection.

Runner-up: Marie’s Olde Towne Tavern on Magnolia Ave., which favors contemporary country a little too much but, overall, has an excellent country selection.

Best selection: Bars like Urban Bar and Sidestreet Tavern at 4921 Homberg Dr. that have those jukeboxes that let you pick a song from thousands of albums in the MP3 format. The drawback is the songs cost $1 each (!), but if you’re drunk enough and want to piss off the bar with Oneida’s 30-minute “Sheets of Easter,” you sure can.

Old favorite: Cumberland Ave.'s Longbranch Saloon’s jukebox keeps changing with the times, but you’ll always find your favorite rock, punk, country, pop and indie classics in there, and it consistently has a great selection for the more nostalgia-prone. (Eric Dawson)

Best Alternative to a Jukebox...
Pilot Light doesn’t have a jukebox, and that’s good news for its patrons because the bartenders, sound men and proprietor all have interesting, eclectic taste in music. Whether it’s a Neil Young or Bob Dylan bootleg, an African electric-likembé band, Japanese psychedelica, Krautrock, old country or folk, Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk or a new album by what will be your favorite band months from now, hanging out at PL before and after a show, or on the increasingly rare bar nights,  is like getting a rock music education on a grad school level. You won’t like all of what you hear and you might occasionally roll your eyes at the sheer pretension of some of it, but Pilot Light’s turntable and CD player are spinning the most diverse selection of music in a public space in town, and if you like what you hear, the fine folks who work there will tell you who it is, and possibly give you an informative, opinionated spiel on the record. (E.D.)

EAT 'EM AND SMILE

Most Questionable Gregg White Experience...
Dude — where’re my nachos? And my pork tacos? We love La Costa located in Market Square – especially the very reasonably happy hour — but if the sudden disappearance of the pork tacos and burrito from the appetizer menu was unpleasant, the absence of the nachos was the unkindest cut of all. A “Latino”-themed restaurant without nachos? This will not stand. The strangest thing about it is that most of the ingredients are probably just lying around the place waiting to be used in other dishes, and the assembly can’t be too terribly labor intensive, so the nachos seem like a win-win for restaurateur and consumer. I hope this wasn’t a move to keep the riff-raff out by eliminating the cheaper menu options because we’ll still eat the hell out of some Tilapia tacos (which are extra delicious with their spicy crema)! Please reconsider, Gregg — we’re craving a heaping pile of black beans, goat cheese, tofu, salsa, crema and whatever else (see — we’re already forgetting!) was atop a bed of crispy tortilla chips. (E.D.)

This was really fun and fresh - unlike that other paper's "Best Of". Keep up the good work!

Knoxville Voice is such a welcome addition. You have really breathed new life into an old medium. Congrats on the new web site, too, it looks great! The corporate-owned newspaper sites in town could learn a thing or two from you!

Posted By: mte on 4/10/08 at 3:20 p.m.

all i'm saying is, you might want to have a feature that prevents banned users from posting. that's all. and maybe some guidelines so people know what'll get them banned. or told they're banned.

Posted By: amo on 4/10/08 at 3:32 p.m.

I think your time stamp is an hour behind. Spring forward, fair Knoxville Voice.

Posted By: paul on 4/10/08 at 3:35 p.m.

aw, sour grapes, mte? this wouldn't be the same mte that got fired by KV last year and now works at MP, would it? let's hope not, it's pretty unprofessional to goad the rival paper via their comments.

Posted By: mte on 4/10/08 at 7:30 p.m.

all i have to say is, nice comment system here.

Posted By: mte on 4/10/08 at 7:30 p.m.

and what i tried to say before that is that i was just trying to make a cheap joke.

Sooo...censorship of comments on the KnoxVoice forums?

Nice. Keep control of the message.
