The Knoxville Arts and Fine Crafts Center is wedged in a tiny, deserted-looking plaza at 1127 Broadway Ave., but maybe finding the center is part of its charm. One step inside the building brings the sounds of children laughing, pottery wheels spinning and creative adults chatting.

“We’re one of Knoxville’s best-kept secrets. This is truly a family-oriented establishment,” says KAFCC director Cathy Maples. The center, a specialty program by the City of Knoxville Department of Community and Neighborhood Services Parks and Recreation Division, has existed for 35 years but moved to its new home in North Knoxville in December 2006.

KAFCC programs are available to people of all ages at varying fees. Maples contracts approximately 20 local artists to instruct students at the center in classes such as stained glass, cardio aerobics, children’s and adult ballet, pottery, drawing, mixed media, photo-framing, piano and jewelry-making, just to name a few. The center offers birthday parties for adults and children, as well as scout badge workshops.

The walls of the center’s main room are adorned with the ever-changing art of local artists. Through April, the paintings and pottery of husband-and-wife team Charlie and Janie Wheeler will be featured.

The KAFCC is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.. Do-it-yourselfers should call ahead to confirm visit and class schedules.
